Quality, Geometry, Methods Make the Grade

July 25, 2014
The capabilities of any foundry are challenged by quality standards and expectations of profitability ASTM E155 Geometry, etc. Is the price right?
Q:Does any aluminum foundry have the capability to make ASTM E 155 Grade A castings in a green sand automated process?A:  ASTM E155 provides “Standard Reference Radiographs for Inspection of Aluminum and Magnesium Castings.” Basically, it sets the levels for quality that the castings must meet for the severity of discontinuities in the casting.

Whether or not a particular aluminum foundry could meet a particular quality level would depend on the type and geometry of the casting, the processes used in the foundry, the X-ray equipment available for testing the castings, and of course the price a customer is willing to pay to meet a particular quality level.

Therefore, the answer is probably “no” — because it is unlikely that any foundry would be able, (or willing) to meet this particular quality level. However, it is likely there are some foundries that could achieve those standards, and produce those castings, if the price was right.
