Somerset Foundries Issues Closing Notice
The management of the 100-year-old gray and ductile iron foundry told workers the company plans to cease operations, according to local reports. The news was delivered to approximately 30 employees at the close of business on December 30.

Auburn, IN, officials this month are due to consider a tax-abatement proposal from the gray iron foundry, which has proposed a $35-million expansion that would come into commercial operation in 2013.

Complexity, Part Consolidation Awarded Again
A three-part cast aluminum frame for a downhill racing bicycle earned the U.K.’s Cast Metals Federation’s Component of the Year Award for 2011. The casting was designed and produced by W.H. Rowe, a Southampton company that operates a sand-casting foundry and gravity diecasting foundry, with various additional services for finishing and adding value to cast parts.

Panel-Mounted Controller for Larger Robots
ABB Robotics released a new version of its IRC5 panel-mounted controller (PMC) with functionality for the largest robots in the series. This includes the robots in ABB’s 7600 series, which are designed for heavy payloads and long reach, and outfitted for heat- and corrosion-protection and are prescribed for melt shops and pouring lines in various types of foundries and diecasting operations.
