500 Molds Per Hour? Possible With New Vertical Molding System

New features of the DISA New Generation line include a redesigned automatic mold conveyor,more robust hydraulics,and cutting-edge monitoring and control.

This summer at the 2007 edition of GIFA, DISA (www.disagroup) introduced the latest in its vertical molding systems, the DISA 231. Nearly four years after the introduction of its New Generation of vertical molding machines at GIFA 2003, they still offer high output with precision, reliability, low maintenance, and improve the working environment.

The initial offering of vertical molding systems offered a new, more rigid mechanical design, greater range of mold sizes, fewer moving parts, PLC, and standardized components. Since 2003, over 100 systems have been placed in foundries worldwide, establishing a reputation that has carried over to the 2007 editions.

“A lot happens over four years,” said Per Ejdorf, v.p. of sales and marketing with DISA. “The latest addition to the New Generation family (DISA 231) raises the bar even further when it comes to performance and quality.” The DISA 231 can produce up to 500 uncored vertical molds an hour with a machine-dependent mismatch of no more than 0.10 mm. Among some of the new features:

Redesigned automatic mold conveyor (AMC) — features larger thrust bars and active braking, using the same integrated control system as the molding machine, enabling superior control of the mold string.

More robust hydraulics — simplified and enhanced, the sound and reliable system combines with state-of-the-art electrical control to enable consistently high output of castings at an even lower cost per mold.

Cutting-edge monitoring and control — uses updated control system hardware and enables straightforward presetting and adaptation of all production parameters for fast pattern change, without compromising speed or quality.

The standard features include double-side mold squeeze, individual positioning of pattern plates in the chamber, enhanced sand shot system, less wear and maintenance due to load reductions on fewer moving parts, and inchamber spray for enhanced workplace air quality, as well as helping to prevent wear on pattern plates.

The DISA APC provides fast pattern change for higher productivity and flexibility, which “sets new standards for foundries producing short runs with frequent pattern change s by enabling pattern change in as little as 60 seconds,” according to Ejdorf.

According to Bob Leffler, general sales manager with DISA Industries in Oswego, IL, interest in the DISA 231 has been very high following GIFA. “We have several existing customers in North America looking to upgrade their older DISA models with the new DISA 231.”
