Foundry Adding SinterCast for CGI Cylinder Heads

March 12, 2018
A Chinese supplier to car and truck markets will modify current series production to address evolving performance and emissions targets

A Chinese foundry is adopting SinterCast compacted-graphite iron technology for its production of 12.7-liter cylinder heads, for heavy-duty trucks. SinterCast will deliver its Mini-System 3000 and a wirefeeder system, which will be installed by midyear at the foundry in Hejin, China.

Shanxi Sanlian Casting Co. Ltd. is a specialty supplier of engine blocks and cylinder heads for passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles. The cylinder heads are already in series production, as gray iron castings.

“With our series production experience from the gray cast iron version of this cylinder head since 2014, we made the strategic decision to partner with SinterCast to meet the aggressive launch targets for this CGI upgrade,” said Wei Fangzhi, chairman of the Sanlian Group. “As a specialist producer of commercial vehicle cylinder blocks and heads, CGI represents a clear growth opportunity for Sanlian.”

SinterCast, based in Stockholm, Sweden, develops and licenses production technology for compacted graphite iron (CGI), a specialty grade of cast iron that has greater tensile strength, stiffness, and fatigue strength than gray iron or aluminum. CGI is gaining popularity with diesel and gas engine manufacturers seeking to reduce weight, noise, and emissions for their designs.

The SinterCast Mini-System 3000 is a mobile process-control unit with a process computer, measurement electronics, and an operator display screen. It’s used in lab settings and in melt shops, and it can be fitted with a wirefeeder system, as necessary, to adjust melt chemistry manually, as indicated by the control system.

“The Sanlian order reaffirms the need for CGI as modern heavy-duty engines evolve to meet the demands for increased performance and emissions compliance,” commented SinterCast president and CEO Dr. Steve Dawson. “With the China VI emissions standards incorporating the most demanding aspects of the current American and European emissions legislation, the use of CGI in Chinese heavy-duty engines will continue to increase.

“We continue to regard commercial vehicles as our largest growth opportunity,” he continued.

“The Sanlian installation marks our eleventh installation in China and our nineteenth installation in Asia,” Dawson noted. We are pleased that our longstanding support of CGI development in Asia, combined with our commitment to local commercial and technical support, has led to Sanlian’s decision to adopt our technology.”
