Canada’s South Coast Air Quality Management District has awarded Cummins Westport $690,000 in development funding towards the ISL G engine product development program. This is in addition to the $600,000 in funding from the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The ISL G natural gas engine is for medium-duty truck, refuse, and urban transit markets, scheduled for commercial launch in 2007. It will surpass U.S. EPA and California Air Resources Board 2007 phase-in levels . The ISL G will also meet 2010 emission standards of 0.2 g/bhp-hr oxides of nitrogen and 0.01 g/bhp-hr particulate matter at launch in 2007, using cooled exhaust gas recirculation and a passive three-way catalyst.

The prototype was unveiled on Sept. 26 at the American Public Transportation conference in Dallas, TX.

“We are thrilled to have additional support for this engine product and its goals,” said Guan Saw, president of Cummins Westport. “This engine will meet U.S. federal and local emissions standards well ahead of schedule, and provide an immediate and lasting solution for our customers that is both economically and environmentally beneficial.”
