Examines lost-foam technology for autos, motorcycles

A research paper by Desheng Sun, Ph.D., “Lost Foam Technology and Lost Foam Coatings for Aluminum Castings,” was named the best presentation at the China Foundry Week conference held recently in Wuhan City, China.  Sun is a staff development chemist with Ashland Casting Solutions. ACS is a business group of Ashland Performance Materials, a division of Ashland Inc.

In his research, Sun detailed how lost-foam technology is used to cast components for automobile and motorcycle manufacturers, and identified ways to control gas release and reduce defects in metal castings.
