Foundry, equipment producer avoids strike
Unions representing workers at Lufkin Industries Inc. in Texas have agreed to a new labor agreement with the producer of gray and ductile iron castings, and other industrial products. Lufkin workers are represented by three unions: the Brotherhood of Boilermakers; the Glass, Molders and Potters Union; and the International Association of Machinists.

Earlier in the week the unions rejected a three-year proposal, after which Lufkin reportedly withdrew a proposed change in work rules.

The new contract expires in October 2011. Terms of the new contract have not been released, though local reports indicate it includes increases in wages and benefits.  A vote of the rank-in-file members is expected soon to ratify the contract.

In addition to foundry products, Lufkin produces a range of oil field pumps, power transmission components, trailer parts and products.
