SinterCast notes high-volume production beyond blocks, heads
Taiwanese metalcaster Da Shiang Precision Co. Ltd. has a new order for high-volume production of silicon-molybdenum alloyed, compacted-graphite iron integrated exhaust manifold/turbocharger housings, according to information from SinterCast AB.  The components will be supplied to BorgWarner and Honeywell, for assembly, and then installed in Volkswagen passenger vehicles.

Production for the new contract began last month, and is seen rising to approximately 1 million castings/year.

SinterCast supplies CGI process control technology used by Da Shiang Precision, as well as for most of the CGI production worldwide. Steve Dawson, president, pointed out that Da Shiang Precision’s new order offers the potential for more than 1 million castings per year, which would represent “high-volume production for SinterCast-CGI beyond the core cylinder block and head sector, and an important reference for the SinterCast technology … .”

Da Shiang Precision is an operating division of Taiwan’s Mei Ta industrial group that supplies OEMs and Tier 1 automotive suppliers in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. It started producing SiMo-CGI turbocharger housings last fall (2007), and now is operating at a rate of 100,000 castings per year. The castings are supplied to BorgWarner, which assembles the units for Renault passenger vehicles.

Y.S. Chen, president of Mei Ta Industrial predicted the “initial series production activities will further increase the confidence in the Mei Ta group as a high-volume supplier of SiMo-CGI exhaust manifolds and turbocharger housings, leading toward additional series production commitments."
