Automotive downturn cited for aluminum foundry shutdown
Indiana’s Fort Wayne Foundry Corp. will close one of its two plants by June 2009, according to local news reports citing a company statement. The targeted plant, called the Lima Road facility, in Fort Wayne, employs 157 workers.
Fort Wayne Foundry produces aluminum sand castings at two plants, one in Fort Wayne and another in Columbia City, IN, with a combined capacity of more than 50 million lb/year. It also operates a separate machining division. Its principal products are automotive engine components.
Fort Wayne Foundry officials cited weak automotive industry demand for the closing.
The machining operation is targeted for downsizing in June, too, according to the same local source. It’s not known how many workers are to be affected in that move.
