OSHA Recognizes Safety, Health Success at McConway & Torley
Ferrous foundry earns “Star” for workplace safety, health
The U.S. Dept. of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has certified McConway & Torley LLC as a new Star site — the highest level of performance in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). The VPPs are cooperative relationships among management, labor, and OSHA to implement and maintain comprehensive safety and health management systems.
VPP sets performance-based criteria for a managed safety and health system, invites sites to apply, and then assesses applicants against these criteria. Companies in the VPP achieve average injury and illness rates 50% below the Bureau of Labor Statistics average for other companies in their respective industries.
OSHA says over 2,160 worksites have earned entry into its VPP. Requirements for entry are a high degree of management commitment and employee involvement; a high-quality worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control program; and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees.
Each of these elements must be effective, in place, and in operation for at least one year before a company can apply to join the VPP.
