Steel Foundry, Army Arsenal to Coordinate Capabilities
Sivyer Steel, RIA JMTC predict quality castings, short lead times, better capacity utilization
Sivyer Steel Corp., a ferrous foundry that produces castings up to 20,000 lb., has entered into a public-private partnership with the U.S. Army’s Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center. The parties explain they will coordinate production capacity to make optimal use of Sivyer’s capabilities for larger castings and RIA JMTC’s capabilities for smaller products. Each partner will have their combined capabilities available for quoting new customer orders.
Sivyer, in Bettendorf, IA, produces carbon, low-alloy, armor, austenitic manganese, stainless steels, and high-chrome iron castings. It is an operating unit of Meterra, a holding company that includes Riverside Products, Waukesha Foundry, and operations in China, India, the U.K., and elsewhere.
Rock Island Arsenal, nearby on an island in the Mississippi, is the nation’s largest U.S. government-owned weapons manufacturing center, and the only vertically integrated metal manufacturing operation for the U.S. Dept. of Defense.
RIA produces ordnance and equipment that includes artillery; gun mounts; recoil mechanisms; small arms; aircraft weapons subsystems; grenade launchers; weapons simulators; and other products.
The two partners collaboration will begin immediately, and they stated that it would lead to them producing quality castings that are priced competitively, with shorter lead times, and better capacity utilization for the two locations.
