Chrysler Group LLC announced it will invest $27 million in its Etobicoke (ONT) Casting Plant, for retooling and job retention.

The new investment will be used to retain 280 jobs and equip the plant for the casting of crossmembers — part of future vehicle suspension systems.  The structural component transfers and filters road loads from the control arms to the body of the vehicle. An additional part of the investment includes more testing and inspection equipment and technology.

Currently, the Etobicoke plant produces aluminum die castings and pistons for a variety of Chrysler vehicles. Built in 1942, the 300,000 ft² facility was purchased in 1964 by Chrysler and has undergone previous expansions in 1965 and 1998.

Etobicoke Casting Plant manager Michael Butz said that the investment is an acknowledgment of the high quality components produced by the skilled workforce. "Being able to expand our parts portfolio better aligns with Chrysler's long-term product strategy, which ensures the future for this facility."
