STL system developer continues to grow its prototyping and patterns service

3D Systems Corporation —a developer and supplier of 3D printing and rapid prototyping systems — has purchased the assets of Express Pattern, which performs rapid prototyping services and supplies patterns for investment casting. The cost of the acquisition has not been reported.

Rock Hill, SC-based 3D Systems indicated that as part of its 3Dproparts service, Express Pattern will increase its capacity for direct precision patterns and investment casting solutions.

3D Systems develops stereolithography for producing prototypes and finished parts. Vernon Hills, IL-based Express Pattern is a prototyper for customers in defense, transportation, recreation and health care markets, offering rapid casting services as well as tooling and parts production.

According to 3D Systems’ announcement, Express Pattern co-founders Dave Flynn and Tom Mueller were active the first beta test of stereolithography equipment in 1987, and have developed proprietary RP applications in various metal and plastic technologies. 3D Systems stated they “bring a combination of unparalleled knowledge and experience in rapid prototyping and manufacturing solutions.”

"We are pleased to add Express Pattern to our rapidly growing 3Dproparts operations," said Abe Reichental, president and CEO of 3D Systems. "We intend to harness the extensive expertise that Dave and Tom bring to our company as we expand our menu of precision, production quality direct investment casting capabilities and manufacturing parts services for the benefit of our customer base."

3Dproparts was launched in 2009 to supply rapid prototyping and manufacturing parts service a year ago, last October. It indicates it will continue to expand 3Dproparts service offerings domestically and internationally through organic growth and additional strategic acquisitions.

Earlier this year 3D Systems acquired the businesses and assets of CEP and Protometal, two French companies in the RP sector, as part of its European expansion effort.  Protometal supplies simulated diecastings from additive manufacturing patterns; CEP is involved in selective laser sintering manufacturing services and urethane casting.
