General Aluminum to Idle Georgia Diecaster
At former Rome Die Casting, all workers due to be laid off
General Aluminum Manufacturing Co. is preparing to idle the Rome, GA, diecasting plant it acquired from the former Rome Die Casting in October 2010. The plant produces aluminum diecastings in various alloys, mostly for automotive applications.
The company, a subsidiary of Cleveland-based Park-Ohio Industries, has filed a layoff notice with the Georgia Department of Labor for all 67 employees of the plant. Half the workers have already been laid off, according to the Rome News-Tribune; the remaining workers will be laid off April 29. The notification indicates the layoffs may be permanent, according to the local source.
The 110,000-ft2 plant was established in 1972 and consists of 28 automated diecasting machines ranging in size from 700- to 1,600-tons to produce parts weighing from 0.5 to 12 lb.
General Aluminum has not commented on its plans or the reasons for the layoffs. In its report to the state agency the company acknowledged that efforts have been made to improve the performance of the Georgia plant since last fall’s acquisition.
General Aluminum produces diecastings and permanent mold and lost foam castings at six other plants in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.
