Cleaning/Finishing: Streamlining Shakeout, Fettling, and Cleaning

Feb. 19, 2006
Making the most of your sand

A lot of foundries solve bottlenecks in their cleaning and finishing departments by updating their shakeout system. The volume of sand carried over and adhering to the castings is the biggest factor relating to shotblast costs (labor to operate, shot consumption, energy consumption, replacement wear parts, and maintenance time).

By stopping the sand from going into the casting cleaning department, and keeping it in the sand system where it belongs, the benefits go right to the bottom line. In addition to saving on all the above shotblasting costs, other savings include less wear on the dust collectors, less waste streams, no airborne silica dust, and less clean up time.
