Dutch manufacturer DAF Trucks N.V. has placed a supply contract with Brazilian metalcaster Tupy S.A. for compacted-graphite iron (CGI) engine blocks. DAF is a part of the PACCAR Group, which manufactures over 1.5 million commercial vehicles per year, sold globally under the Kenworth, Peterbilt, and DAF brands.
Tupy produces about 500,000 metric tons/year of cast iron parts at two foundries in Joinville and Mau, Brazil, and is one of the world’s most prominent producers of CGI automotive components. The DAF order commences in October at the Mau foundry.
For DAF, Tupy will supply 10,000 engine blocks and 10,000 cylinder heads annually over five years. Each block/head set will have a combined weight of more than 1,200 lb (575 kg.) The six-cylinder, 12.9-liter diesel engines are part of DAF’s MX series for commercial vehicles, which are compliant with Euro 5 and U.S. EPA 2007 emission standards.
CGI blocks are already in production by Tupy at Mau, for commercial vehicle engines supplied to MAN AG and Navistar International.
Luiz Tarqunio, Tupy president and CEO, states: “The DAF order represents another important step forward for CGI and for Tupy, and further reinforces the transition toward CGI in state-of-the-art commercial vehicle diesel engine cylinder blocks and heads. The DAF engine becomes the third CGI commercial vehicle engine in series production at our Mau foundry, and represents Tupy’s first production order from DAF.

Tupy uses SinterCast process control technology for its CGI production process. SinterCast president and CEO Dr. Steve Dawson states: “Together with Tupy, we are pleased that our CGI process control experience has been recognized by yet another of the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers. In combination with the ongoing SinterCast-CGI commercial vehicle production for Ford-Otosan, Hyundai, International-Navistar, MAN, and Volvo, the DAF MX order results in 13 SinterCast-CGI commercial vehicle engine component in series production, with a potential annual volume of more than 1 million engine equivalents, and providing recurring revenues of more than SEK 20 million ($2.883 million) per year.”
