Süd-Chemie Buys More Capacity for Foundry Chemical Products

July 13, 2008
Acquires German manufacturing plant from AlzChem

Süd-Chemie AG has agreed to buy a chemical plant in Hart, Bavaria, that manufactures products for metalcasting. The seller is AlzChem Hart GmbH, Trostberg, Germany, a part of Evonik Industries AG, and the value of the purchase has not been reported.

Most of the plant’s products are specialty chemicals for iron foundries, specifically automotive castings, according to a release. The plant’s 140 workers will be integrated into SKW Giesserei GmbH, Hart, a Süd-Chemie subsidiary that markets metallurgical foundry chemicals.

In 2004, Süd-Chemie took over SKW Giesserei GmbH from Evonik‘s predecessor company, Degussa AG.

Dr. Günter von Au, chairman of Süd-Chemie AG, stated: "Following our successful takeover of the marketing operations four years ago and their subsequent expansion, we are delighted to now also be taking over the foundry chemicals production in Hart, allowing us to offer our foundry know-how in the metallurgy sector from a single source."

Süd-Chemie is a partner with Ashland Inc. in a joint venture, ASK Chemicals, which produces cold-set sand binders, additives, and release agents. Recently, Ashland and Süd-Chemie outlined a plan to merge Ashland Casting Solutions with the foundry-related businesses of Süd-Chemie and ASK into a global joint venture serving foundry markets.
