This Week’s Metalcasting News Review

Steelcast, Caterpillar in Long-Term Supply Agreement

India’s largest steel foundry, Steelcast Ltd. has a long-term agreement to supply Caterpillar Inc. with ferrous castings. Reportedly, Caterpillar will provide a four-year, $5-million, interest-free loan to Steelcast as it installs new production capacity to supply castings to Caterillar’s specifications.

Diecaster Wins Military R&D Award

Pennsylvania's Performance Metal Products has earned a five-year, $50-million contract for engineering services in support of the Armament Research, Development, and Engineering Center (ARDEC) at the U.S. Army’s Picatinny Arsenal, in New Jersey. "It’s quite exciting,” CEO Hank Leipert said. “It’s by far the biggest contract we’ve ever been awarded."

Still Rapid, but More Than Prototyping

processes used for decades now to convert design information from CAD format into solid materials have come so far in terms of their capabilities and applications that creating prototypes is only a part of what is accomplished. For metalcasters, this is a critical point, because the changes are having a profound effect on how the technology can be used in their organizations, and offers potential for altering what “casting” means.

Slow down, speed up

We face two problems at the same time: slow economic growth and exploding debt. We're not going to escape this without some pain, but we face a profoundly more difficult challenge if the federal government continues to inhibit corporations and individuals from contributing their own best efforts, even as it willfully dodges its own responsibility to control deficits.

New Products

Low-Cost Air Filtration

Schenck Process, known for designing weighing and feeding systems, has expanded its range to include air-filtration technology, following its acquisition of 2011 Clyde Process Solutions, a supplier of air filtration, pneumatic conveying, and injection technologies. Schenck’s new MCF filter system is adaptable for various uses, including heavy industrial plants.

Improved Flashing Sounders

’s new PATROL Series PA X 5 105 dB(A) industrial flashing sounders are designed as an integrated flashing sounder, rather than combining a sounder with a bolted-on flashing light. The lens cover is large, highly visible, and available in a variety of colors. The xenon strobe flash tube contains no filament to break and is secured by a steel clamp to further protect it from abuse. Users can choose a selection of acoustic tones that are electronically self-generated – and because there are no moving parts, the device’s reliability is enhanced for critical applications.
