TYCO Foundry Marks Safety Milestones

Central Castings Corp. in Anniston, AL, reports that it has completed and surpassed 2 million continuous hours of safe operation, and 1,620 consecutive working days without a lost-time accident. The milestone occurred on October 4, 2010.

The malleable iron foundry is an operating subsidiary of TYCO Fire Suppression and Building Products. The management there notes that in addition to the recent safety milestone the plant has not incurred an OSHA Recordable Incident for more than 13 months.

A lost-time accident, or LTA, is generally understood to be an incident that causes an employee to lose one or more days of work. The federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration requires plants to maintain records (OSHA Recordable Incident) on a range of work-related injuries and illnesses, including: restricted work activity (RWA); lost work activity (days away from work); medical treatment beyond first aid (OSHA recordable, non-lost time); transfer to another job due to injury; loss of consciousness; and fatality related to work. Injuries that require first aid and “near misses” are not OSHA Recordable.

“The Anniston team is very proud of this achievement,” stated Central Castings director of operations Robert Smith. “We feel it demonstrates TYCO’s and this team’s commitment to a safe workplace.

“Our team’s collective focus over the past several years has been to make a safe work environment a core value of the plant’s culture, rather than a program. While we celebrate the good performance, we are not driving numbers, but rather we believe a safe work environment is not a priority but a precondition. There are numerous benefits of this employee driven culture. Just one example is there are no active work’s compensation cases for this plant. The last open case was closed over six months ago,” Smith concluded.
