OSHA Cites NY Iron Foundry

Dec. 3, 2019
33 workplace health/safety violations issued to Frazer & Jones Co., which faces $460K in penalties

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited a New York iron foundry for 33 workplace health-and-safety violations. Frazer & Jones Company Inc. could incur fines totaling $460,316 as a consequence of the violations.

OSHA inspectors issued citations for multiple hazards, including exposing employees to crystalline silica, iron oxide, combustible dust, falls, struck-by and caught-between hazards, unsafe work floors and walking surfaces, inadequate respiratory protection, deficient safeguards for entering confined spaces, inaccessible and unavailable fire extinguishers, and an impeded exit route.

The agency also noted the foundry lacked an effective program for removing pests, and did not prevent the build-up of bird droppings on equipment.

“These hazards expose workers to injuries and long-term health effects,” stated Jeffrey Prebish, the OSHA Syracuse Area Director. “Employers must recognize the safety and health risks inherent to their work operations and environment, and take necessary precautions to protect employees who perform those operations.”

The agency announced the citations on November 26. In line with OSHA regulations, Frazer & Jones was allowed 15 business days from receipt of the citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA's area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

The foundry in Solvay, NY, near Syracuse, produces ductile and malleable iron for castings weighing up to 25 lbs., at a rate of approximately 90 million units/year. Its cast products include underground roof expansion anchors and components for mining operations, as well as automotive, natural gas, electrical, utility, rail, construction, and tool markets.
