Charlotte Pipe and Foundry will be relocating its specialty pipe-coating activities from its former headquarters site in the city of Charlotte, NC, to the greenfield operation it opened in Oakboro, NC, in 2023. The former location in Charlotte had been the foundry’s base since 1901.
The company’s Edge HP Iron products are specially coated cast iron pipes and fittings designed for aggressive drain, waste, and vent (DWV) applications.
The move was announced by the Stanly County Economic Development Commission, the economic development agency in the new location, which is about 30 miles east of the city of Charlotte.
“Charlotte Pipe and Foundry is excited about continuing to add operational capacity at our Oakboro facility,” stated CEO Hooper Hardison. “We are particularly grateful to the Stanly County Board of County Commissioners, the town of Oakboro Commissioners and the Stanly County Economic Development Commission for their continued cooperation and support.”
The move will be completed by the end of this year. The commission’s announcement indicated the relocation will create 11 new jobs at the foundry and result in approximately $10.5 million of new capital investment.
Currently, the Oakboro plant employs 555 people. It has more than 11 acres under roof, on a 428-acre site. It is served by a rail spur that connects Charlotte Pipe to a shortline railroad, and gives the foundry access to a wide network of resource and distribution channels.
Charlotte Pipe produces cast iron service pipe, extra-heavy pipe, and hubless pipe and fittings for DWV applications. It also produces a line of "double hub" pipes. And the group produces DWV pipes products in PVC, ABS, and CPVC thermoplastics at plants in Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Utah.
“We congratulate Charlotte Pipe on this exciting transition and look forward to their continued success in Oakboro,” according to the announcement.
