FS&D to Oversee Brembo Foundry Expansion

April 21, 2010
Five-year foundry expansion to incorporate advanced automation and quality control
Foundry Solutions & Design has a contract from Brembo S.p.A. to provide project management engineering and installation support for an expansion of the group’s gray iron foundry in Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland. Brembo is an Italian company that produces high-performance disc brakes for cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles worldwide. It also produces clutches, seats, seat belts, and other components. FS&D, Norcross, GA, is an engineering group that specializes in metalcasting facility design. It provides consulting, operational assistance, general contracting, equipment automation, and installation service consulting to the foundry industry. The 70,000-metric tons/year Brembo foundry was completed in 2006 adjacent to its disc brake machining plant. In March, Brembo announced a five-year, $110-million project to double the output of the foundry will proceed. About $83 million of the investment will cover capacity expansion, and about $27 million will be directed toward expansion of the site’s disc machining shops. FS&D indicates the new foundry will be a world-class operation with the most advanced automation and quality control options available. It said Brembo will receive an $18.5-million EU grant to incorporate some unspecified metalcasting innovations introduced by FS&D. Construction is due to begin shortly, and the new capacity is expected to be available in late 2011.
