Algorithms now deliver to me a steady stream of reports warning about the ill effects of artificial intelligence. Presumably, they’ve identified me as an AI skeptic. That’s not entirely wrong - but it’s not quite right either. My skepticism is not about what AI can do; its capabilities are increasingly clear. My concern is about what it does to us - its users, and in many ways its raw material.

Even the term “artificial intelligence” may be slightly premature. For most people, AI is experienced through a narrow set of tools: virtual assistants, recommendation systems, and large language models that generate responses on demand. These systems draw from vast pools of existing information and present answers with remarkable speed and fluency. They are, in effect, a sophisticated form of aggregation, something like crowd-sourced intelligence at scale. Their convenience is undeniable, and their reliability is often impressive. But their influence on human thinking, behavior, and purpose raises deeper questions about long-term cognitive consequences.

One consequence is cognitive offloading. With AI readily available to answer questions, summarize information, and suggest ideas, it becomes easy to delegate tasks that once required personal effort and reflection. This efficiency is appealing; it frees us to focus on more complex or creative work. But there is a trade-off. Memory, problem-solving, and sustained attention depend on regular use. Our brains adapt to how they are exercised, and when these functions are routinely outsourced their sharpness diminishes. Over time, this may foster a growing reliance on external systems at the expense of internal reasoning.

This shift is closely tied to another concern: the reinforcement of instant gratification. Questions that once required research, discussion, or trial and error can be answered now in seconds. This acceleration is a clear advantage in many ways, but it may erode our tolerance for difficulty and ambiguity. Struggle, uncertainty, and even failure have always been essential to developing intellectual resilience. If those experiences are minimized or bypassed, the habits that sustain perseverance and resourcefulness may weaken.

The effects extend beyond individual cognition into social behavior. As interactions with AI systems become more common - not only for assistance, but also for entertainment and even companionship - the nature of human exchange begins to shift. AI conversations are typically efficient, responsive, and tailored to users’ preferences. They are useful in precisely those ways. But they lack the unpredictability and friction of human dialogue. Engaging with other people - colleagues, peers, even strangers - often requires us to defend our ideas, confront disagreement, and refine our thinking. These moments are not always comfortable, but they are intellectually valuable. If AI minimizes such interactions, opportunities to sharpen reasoning and communication skills may diminish.

There is also a broader question about the changing value of skills. In an AI-driven environment, the ability to use tools effectively may begin to outweigh an understanding of the underlying processes. AI advocates argue that this shift democratizes access to knowledge, enabling more people to perform complex tasks. That may be true. But it also introduces a form of dependency. When cognitive work is consistently mediated by AI, the ability to perform that work independently can decline. This raises a fundamental question: is intelligence defined by what we know and can do, or by how effectively we can deploy external systems? An overreliance on AI risks weakening the kind of intellectual independence that has long defined human capability.

The implications may reach even further. Work has historically provided not only economic value, but also a framework for intellectual engagement and personal meaning. As AI automates more tasks, it may reduce opportunities for individuals to apply their skills in ways that feel purposeful. If that happens, motivation to learn, think critically, and develop expertise could erode alongside those opportunities.

Artificial intelligence does not inherently make people intellectually weaker. But it creates conditions in which that outcome becomes more likely. This is not a failure of the technology, nor is it the fault of those who build it. It is, instead, a signal to those who use it. The question is not what AI will become, but what we will become in response to it: How will we choose to think, to learn, and to engage when the effort is no longer required.
