AFS Selects Next Chief Executive
The American Foundry Society named Justin Scott, Ph.D., CAE, as its next chief executive officer, beginning May 1. Last year current CEO Doug Kurkul announced his intention to retire after 10 years in that role.
“The American Foundry Society has an incredible legacy of technical leadership and industry stewardship,” Scott stated. “I’m energized by the opportunity to serve as CEO and to partner with the AFS community at a pivotal moment for metalcasting.”
Scott has been the vice president for Innovation & Analytics at Metal Service Center Institute since September 2021. Previously, he was with The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, and at the IDA Science & Technology Policy Institute. “Across roles in associations and public policy, Scott has worked to bridge technical expertise, industry needs, and organizational strategy to strengthen manufacturing-focused communities,” according to the AFS announcement.
Scott earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Material Science Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 2004, and a Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from Northwestern University in 2010.
AFS explained that Scott had been selected by a search committee that received more than 360 applicants. Their selection was endorsed by the AFS Board of Directors.
“Justin Scott is uniquely qualified to carry on and build upon the strong foundations of advocacy, education, innovation and superior member service at AFS,” stated David Gilson, sales and marketing director for SinterCast AB, who co-chaired the search committee.
Doug Kurkul has been CEO of AFS since 2016, and is credited with increasing its corporate membership from 794 to 1,115, expanding technical and management programs, conducting an economic impact study, introducing Foundry E-Learning, and strengthening its balance sheet.
Scott will join AFS February 2 and serve concurrently with Kurkul until May 1 – to ensure an orderly transition.
