Grinding Discs for Hard-to-Reach Spaces

SAINT-GOBAIN ABRASIVES is introducing Vortex® Rapid Prep 2- and 3-inch mini flap discs for grinding in “tighter, hard to reach” spaces for aerospace parts and metal fabrications. Constructed with layers of surface conditioning material and Vortex grain technology, used on a pneumatic die grinder, these offer customers the same cutting power of a coarser grit while achieving a finer finish.

The new discs will be exhibited at Fabtech 2025 in Chicago, September 8-11. Other Vortex® Rapid Prep products to be presented there are non-woven flap discs, which will  last longer and produce significantly increased cutting rates and smear-free finishes simultaneously. Norton-patented Vortex agglomerated aluminum-oxide grain technology achieves the cutting power of a coarser grit while producing a finer finish, in a single abrasive disc.

Norton Vortex® Rapid Blend coarse-grit wheels and discs offer a finishing process that reduces and blends welds in a single operation, providing a 30-50% improvement in productivity, while leaving smear-free finishes.

Norton Quantum3™ (NQ3) grinding and cutting wheels cut “fast and sharp”, with metal removal rate increases in less time, with reduced operator fatigue - meaning significantly increased grinding output and lower costs. These wheels feature a proprietary grain and a tougher bond system containing a combination of fillers and bonding agents.

Also on exhibit will be Norton RazorStar belts, quick-change and fiber discs that feature an engineered-shaped ceramic grain. It’s described as “a revolutionary technology with unbeatable performance and metal removal rates in the toughest grinding applications when performing off-hand and/ or automated grinding.” The specially shapped “razor-sharp” grains are oriented in an upright position along with a special supersized grinding aid, significantly reducing heat generation for cooler cuts and longer life on a range of materials, such as carbon steel, aluminum, stainless steel, nickel alloys and other hard-to-grind metals.

RazorStar belts are effective for impact grinding and off-hand applications, as well as robotic grinding.
