GK Designing Charlotte Pipe’s Material Handling System

Contract covers the furnace-charging system and equipment linking the molding line through to the cleaning room, for greenfield foundry project.

Vibratory-equipment manufacturer and integrator General Kinematics Corp. is developing and will supply the material-handling system for Charlotte Pipe and Foundry’s greenfield project in Oakboro, NC. GK will be responsible for the furnace-charging system as well as the equipment that links the end of the molding line through to the cleaning room.

In May 2020, Charlotte Pipe announced it will invest at least $325 million to relocate its operation from Charlotte to a 428-acre site in Oakboro – about 30 miles from where it has produced cast-iron pipe since 1901.

The two-year project is scheduled for completion in Q3 2023.

"Everyone at General Kinematics is excited for Charlotte Pipe as they begin the huge undertaking of relocating their foundry operations,” according to GK president Tom Musschoot. “I am appreciative of the trust that the team at Charlotte Pipe has put in our company and am proud that General Kinematics gets to be part of this historic move."
