Grede Files WARN Notice

About 170 workers will be affected when an iron foundry and machining operations are shut down, as scheduled for October in Meadville, PA.

Grede LLC filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice in Pennsylvania, indicating its intention to close its ductile iron foundry in Meadville, PA, by October 10. About 170 workers will be affected by the closing, according to the state record.

The federal WARN Act requires employers to provide notice to workers at least 60 days in advance of high volume layoffs or plant closures when 60 or more employees are affected.

In April 2025 Grede filed a WARN notice in Alabama prior to closing its foundry in Brewton, AL.

The Meadville plant is a former Neenah Enterprises foundry that Grede acquired in August 2021.

Former Grede CEO Cary Wood explained then that the Meadville foundry’s capabilities for commercial vehicle and industrial products would bring more balance to the group’s “end market exposure while demonstrating our commitment to investing in unique capabilities to be a best-in-class supplier to this customer segment."

In addition to ductile iron casting, the foundry that includes a heat-treating line for austempered ductile iron parts. Grede also operates a machining plant in Meadville.

It produces components for heavy truck, construction equipment, railroad, and mining equipment. Examples of its finished products include shift yokes, pump housings, bearing caps, brackets, and pinions.

The Southfield, MI-based ferrous casting group has not commented on the planned closing. Grede operates five other foundries, in Biscoe, NC, New Castle, IN, Reedsburg and Wauwatosa, WI, and St. Cloud, MN. It also has machining operations in Biscoe, NC, and Menomonee Falls, WI.
