Steel Foundry Files WARN

A court-appointed receiver has been unable to locate a buyer for Maynard Steel Casting, pointing the Milwaukee operation to a December shutdown.

Maynard Steel Casting Co. in Milwaukee is on track to close early in December, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing with the Wisconsin Dept. of Workforce Development, and dated October 5. The notice indicates 77 employees will be affected by the shutdown that will begin on December 4.

The federal WARN Act requires employers to provide notice to workers at least 60 days in advance of high volume layoffs or plant closures when 60 or more employees are affected.

In operation since 1907, Maynard Steel Casting is a 420,000-sq.-ft operation, with multiple electric arc furnaces pouring heavy-duty carbon and low-alloy steel castings from 1,000 to 35,000 lbs., for Tier 1 and Tier 2 industrial customers. The foundry also offers pattern design, heat treating, NDT and mechanical testing, finish machining, and painting.

In May a state court placed the business in receivership, launching a search for a buyer. The receiver posted a sale notice in June, aiming to sell the foundry as a going concern. According to that statement: “Sales have declined from $27,698,425 in 2024 to $19,865,569 in 2025. Certain customers have informed management that orders would increase if there were indications that delivery times and quality were to be improved. Due to the sales volume being below the break-even point, the Company has experienced losses in 2025 and for the first quarter of 2026.”

The receiver’s failure to find a buyer resulted in the WARN notice. That notification includes a letter to Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson announcing the December 4 closing date, and explaining that Maynard Steel was not able to provide earlier notice of the December shutdown “as it qualifies under the ‘unforeseeable business circumstances, ‘faltering company’, and ‘liquidating fiduciary ‘exceptions set forth in the WARN Statutes.”
