Over the course of its 89-year history, MTI Metalcasting (MTI) has evolved to become the leading provider of green sand molding materials for the industry.  Our high-quality green sand bonds and specialty chromite sands, paired with a global network of technical support specialists, provide foundries with a comprehensive solutions package.  Our exceptional ability to evaluate foundry operations, diagnose problems, and provide customized solutions, provide added value above and beyond our quality products.  This value translates into productivity to keep our foundry customers competitive across the markets they serve. 

We have consistently focused on delivering value-added solutions to the foundry industry since our establishment as American Colloid Company in 1927.  Our Volclay® product continues to be regarded as the global standard for premium foundry-grade bentonite today.

MTI’s customized solutions enhance casting production and performance and are used worldwide by both small and large-scale metalcasting foundries.  Our complete product range consists of bentonites, customized Additrol® performance blends used in ductile and grey iron castings and Hevi-Sand® used in steel and non-ferrous foundry castings, as well as in core shops.

MTI is committed to provide this same customer focus and value to the international foundry marketplace.  MTI has a strong presence in China with mining and blending operations in Dongming and Tianjin.  In Europe, MTI has mining and blending operations in Enez, Turkey and operations in the United Kingdom. Over the past 10-plus years, MTI has also been serving foundry businesses in Korea, Japan, Thailand and Australia.  Most recently, MTI has invested in blending operations in Chennai, India, and is poised to grow in that rapidly emerging market.

Operational Excellence and Capabilities

Operational Excellence defines American Colloid’s performance standard.  We employ a myriad of improvement tools and technologies to engage our workforce at all levels, build standard work, continuously improve upon safety and productivity, look for new and better ways to enhance our mine to market supply chain, and ultimately provide the best value we can to our customers.  We have eight Additrol® blending facilities within the U.S. that combined with our new, metrics driven, Kanban based supply chain, enable us to provide timely delivery.  We are continually reinvesting in the network, with projects like our new blending facility in Shell Rock, Iowa, and new bulk storage facilities in Neenah, Wisconsin and York, Pennsylvania.

Lab Capabilities

MTI provides a wide range of laboratory support capabilities ranging from new product development to evaluating customer submitted sand samples.  The team strives to identify appropriate solutions and provide tools that can be used to track trends in our customer’s sand system in order to help diagnose problems and discover opportunities for improvement.

Our advanced laboratory facilities and our team of highly qualified and experienced scientists support exploration, mining and production of our products; as well as provide extensive product testing and research analysis for new and improved products.
