SinterCast reported the impending start of production for a compacted graphite iron engine block by Ironcast de Frontera, in Monclova, Mexico. The 13-liter engines are destined for a North American commercial vehicle manufacturer, highlighting a trending demand for CGI in that market sector, “driven by tightening emissions regulations including EPA 27 in North America from 2027 and Euro 7 in Europe from 2029, which require higher combustion pressures that conventional cast iron cannot sustain,” according to SinterCast’s announcement.
“With approximately two thirds of all CGI produced globally made using SinterCast process control, we are at the center of the structural shift underway in the commercial vehicle industry,” stated SinterCast president and CEO Dr. Vitor Anjos. “… next-generation engines must sustain combustion pressures that conventional cast iron cannot meet, and CGI is the proven solution.”
Although not identified by SinterCast, Volvo Trucks recently announced two new 13-liter engines, launching in Q3 in Europe and later to be available in North America.
CGI is a lightweight cast iron that offers greater tensile strength, stiffness, and fatigue strength than gray iron or aluminum. SinterCast developed and licenses the most widely adopted process technology for refining CGI.
Ironcast is a former Teksid and Stellantis ferrous foundry now operating as a Cummins Inc. holding. Already a licensee of SinterCast technology, it is preparing to start casting the new engine blocks later this year. In addition to an April capacity expansion there, Ironcast has ordered an installation of SinterCast’s new desulphurization process during Q3. As described in SinterCast’s Q1 2026 CEO message this “three-station configuration” makes it possible for the foundry to treat three ladles simultaneously, for higher CGI throughput.
“This marks the first installation of the SinterCast desulphurization solution, expanding the foundry’s CGI production capability from the current induction furnaces to also include cupola iron,” according to that message.
According to process developer, the amount of CGI to be produced by Ironcast under this engine supply contract “adds to the volume that SinterCast previously announced for this engine program, in June 2025.” At that time, SinterCast reported its licensee Tupy S.A. would launch CGI production at its foundry in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, later this year, for deliveries to the truck builder in 2027.
“In total, the (engine) program is forecasted to potentially add approximately 13% to the SinterCast current series production at mature volumes,” the developer reported in its current announcement.

It is a strong endorsement of our capabilities and of the collaboration between Ironcast and SinterCast. Our robust CGI process will ensure efficient long-term production and the delivery of world-class components to our customers,” stated Ironcast plant manager Armando Garza.
