Maus Unveils New Vertical Turning Center

March 28, 2008
New machine design is the first product of Indian j.v.

Maus SpA and Tal Manufacturing Solutions have introduced the first machine tool produced by their joint venture, the Vertiturn VTC vertical turning center.

Last summer, Maus and Tal, the machine-building division of Tata Motors Ltd., established their venture in Pune, India. The new machine was introduced there earlier this month.

According to Maus, the Vertiturn VTC is based on its own vertical turning technology, and features a cast iron base; CAD-optimized rigid construction; high-precision linear motion guideways for the X and Y axes; spindle torque up to 5,000 rpm, for machining large parts and difficult materials; 18-position tool changing; live tooling on larger models; and an available automatic rotary pallet changer.

All machine functions are controlled by a Siemens 810D CNC, fed by absolute encoders on both axes. Travel on the Vertiturn machines is 800 mm (~31.50 in.) in the X axis, and 700 mm (~27.56 in.) in the Y axis. It also has telescoping steel way covers, a high-capacity coolant system, and pre-loaded C3 class precision ball screws.

Maus states that the VTC will be used to machine large parts like brake discs, brake drums, hubs, bearings, gears, and aluminum wheels.

“It was a great satisfaction for us to see this first machine produced so quickly, following the formal agreement with Tal,” stated Maus managing director Roberto Sammartin. “This is the result of a great spirit of cooperation between Maus and Tal, on the technical level, as well as the human level. Our companies interacted very well and we’re certain this will signal a bright future for both of us.”
